SPLIT STAKE FENCE

Installation guide ganivelle or treillage

Preparation

  • Clear the area where the fencing is going to be placed. Remove old fencing, tree stumps and branches, etc.
  • Level the area where the fence is to be placed.
  • Measure the exact length of the first straight section and place the two corner posts first (see placing posts).
  • Over the length between these first two corner posts, divide the posts at equal intervals (see table).
  • Tension the masonry rope between the two corner posts, at the level of the top iron wire of the lattice fence/ganivelle/treillage to be placed.
Positioning the posts

  • Using the tip of the post and the masonry cord, determine the location of the hole.
  • Make a hole in the ground using an auger.
  • Place the post in the hole, with the most straight side of the post towards the fencing.
  • Hammer the post into the ground with the wooden mallet, up to the desired level (height of the masonry cord).
  • Place the other posts in the same way.
Placing Ganivelle

  • The trellis has no front or back, it does have a bottom or top, the points belong upwards.
  • Unroll the trellis a bit and place the first batten on the first post, placing a screw under each wire.
  • At each subsequent post, stretch the fencing well and tighten it with a spade before attaching it with the screws. (see photo)
Connecting two rolls of ganivelle

If you need more than one roll of fencing, you can connect them in the following way:
  • Remove the last batten from the already placed roll by using a pair of pincers to twist open the iron wire.
  • Straighten the iron wire a little i.e. pull out any wrinkles.
  • Place the first batten of the new roll between the iron wires.
  • Using the pincers, twist the two iron wires together again around the first batten of the next roll until it is tight.
  • Then cut off the iron wires that are too long. (see photo)

Tips

  • The diameter of the hole of the post should not be larger than the diameter of the post. The depth of the hole depends on the part of the post that needs to go into the ground.

  • When installing the posts, it is wise to have the top of the post end at the level of the top iron wire of the fence. This gives a neat appearance.

  • The posts are 'naturally' flat. For the best effect, choose the flattest side, on the side of the fence. This facilitates fixing the ganivelle with the screws to the post.

  • You tension the lattice using a spa (see photo). Place the spa between the batten and, using the post, tension the lattice fencing to the correct tension and then screw it to the post. Do keep the spade at the height of one of the iron wires to avoid breaking the lath!

  • Use screws with a milling head, to avoid splitting the slats. This eliminates the need to pre-drill and will make it easier to fit the fencing tightly against the posts.
